“Krona” Foundation has purchased and delivered new equipment to the National Children’s Specialized Hospital “Okhmatdyt” for intraoperative histological express diagnostics. This is a new method for the hospital and its specialists, which will enable more accurate and less traumatic diagnosis and treatment of tumors in children.
Intraoperative express histological diagnostics is performed during surgery in real time. Pathohistologists receive a tissue sample from surgeons and analyze the nature of the tumor—malignant or benign—within 15–20 minutes.
Based on this data, surgeons decide on the surgical strategy and the extent of tissue resection—for example, which parts to remove and which can be preserved.
Previously, obtaining such information required at least a day, and in some cases, repeat surgeries were necessary. This is traumatic for anyone, but especially for young patients.
This method is particularly important when removing tumors or addressing intestinal obstructions in children.
The foundation purchased a cryostat, an automatic section transfer system, state-of-the-art microscopes, and fume hoods for the hospital, totaling 5.95 million UAH.
The procurement was carried out as part of the assistance project for Okhmatdyt with the support of the Japanese Government’s “Kusanone” program.
